Companies from Norway, Singapore, and the UK were invited to perform the grinding of crankshaft bearings that had seized due to a lube oil pump failure. However, they were unable to complete the repair because they did not have a compact, portable tool, which was necessary to work through the limited space available via the inspection window.

Challenges of Working in Tight Engine Spaces

Understanding the space limitations, RA Power Solutions designed and built a special crankshaft grinding machine that could be inserted through the inspection window. Using this machine, all six pins were successfully ground, and the engine is now running smoothly and reliably.

Creative Compact Grinding Solution

Onsite Crankshaft Repair was made possible because RA Power Solutions designed a compact, lightweight grinding machine tailored to fit the engine’s inspection window and crankcase space. Using this machine, the technicians were able to grind the crankshaft and maintain tolerances within 20 microns, well within the manufacturer’s specified limit of 30 microns.
